J.L. Borges once described the paintings of Xul Solar as “documents of the unearthly world, of the metaphysical world in which the gods take the forms of imagination, dreams.” It is in those dreams where we perceive a stable reality that we sometimes confuse with true reality. As with the tale of the Lotus-eaters, in which Odysseus’ men fell into a dream state after eating the lotus flowers, a state that caused them to mistake reality and desire only to stay on the island and eat more of intoxicating flowers. Traveling with the light from the Atlantic to Berlin is also a dream in which you can find a reality, a reality in which you can fall in love with northern lights, cold winters, and central European women. As a fantastic lotus flower keeps you awake, so to it delights human forms that make dreams: images of Raphael, Caravaggio, the death of the Virgin or the life of the immortality, wrap you up to drive you to the sortilege of the art, and finally to paint in black tables baptized with toner powder.

What Is Life?

A frenzy.

What Is Life?

An illusion, a shadow, a fiction, and the greatest good is small: that all life is a dream, and dreams, dreams are.

Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Life is a Dream (1635)
